Bamburi sees 37% drop in net profit in 2019

Kenya-based Bamburi Cement has posted a 37 per cent YoY fall in net profit in 2019. Net profit declined to KES359m (US$3.39m) from KES572m in 2018. Bamburi Cement’s subsidiary, Hima Cement, is consulting leaders and the local community in Moroto in Uganda, to access surface mining rights. Uganda sees big drop in cement prices

Uganda has seen increased competition and lower cement prices with the entry of Simba Cement (National Cement – Devki Group) and Kampala Cement. A 50kg bag now retails at an average price of UGX28,000 (US$5.70), down from UGX39,000 (US$10.80). While Hima Cement (LafargeHolcim)and Tororo Cement remain the dominant players, competition has been accelerated by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives' measures to fast-track licensing of new cement manufacturers.

Kenya’s domestic cement exports have recorded a 65.3 per cent decline in value to KES362.28m (US$3.5m) in the first six months of the year, against KES1.04bn in the 1H18, according to preliminary cement exports statistics from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS) returned cement imports into Rwanda by Uganda's Hima Cement Ltd (LafargeHolcim group) last month after they failed to meet the country's import quality standards. Hima Cement Ltd has agreed to surrender back over 30 acres of land it illegally acquired in Mwello, Tororo, Uganda, according to The Observer.
