Cimpor starts exporting from Portugal to northern Brazil

Cimpor has started its first exports to northern Brazil from Portugal, according to local press reports. The first shipment of 28,000t of cement has already reached the port of Manaus, northwestern Brazil, Valor Economico reported. Camargo Correa's subsidiary InterCement, which owns Cimpor, plans to import some 70,000t of Portuguese cement this year. Apart from Brazil, Cimpor seeks to expand its exports to Algeria, Togo and Paraguay amid the shrinking sales in the domestic market.

Nepal sees double-digit rise in imports

Cement imports to Nepal have increased by 15.5 per cent in the first 10 months of the year, according to data from the Trade and Export Promotion Centre. During the review period, Nepal imported NPR3.34bn compared to NPR2.89m in the same period of last year, despite seven new cement factories being established. Algeria’s cement imports double

Cement imports into Algeria reached US$159.4m in the first five months of 2013, representing a 102 per cent rise when compared with the equivalent period of 2012, according to the National Information and Statistics Centre of the Algerian Customs. In terms of volumes, a 105 per cent rise was noted with tonnage reaching 1.791Mt. The rise is due to the launch of new projects and the resumption of public construction work since the start of spring.

Saudi Port Authority (SPA) says cement shipments have been coming since the start of implementing the decrees of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to import 10Mt of cement to cover local demand. About 350,000t of cement have reached from the UAE and Egypt through various Saudi ports. Iran currently exports cement to 24 countries with around 97 per cent of total cement export destined for seven countries. Nepal-based cement producer Ghorahi Cement Industry has launched its Sagarmatha brand into the local market with an unveiling ceremony held on Thursday. Iraq to halt imports indefinitely from next month

The Cabinet of Iraq has decided to halt cement imports, including white cement, as of 1 July 2013. Aswat al-Iraq News reported that the cabinet has decided to stop all commercial cement imports until the Ministry of Industry recognises an actual need for volumes due to the non-sufficiency of local production. The Ministry of Industry had also stopped issuing import licence as of 14 May 2013, the statement noted.

Nigeria government outlines savings from reduced imports

The decision by the Nigerian government to not issue cement import licences in 2012 and focus on meeting domestic needs internally has saved the country approximately NGN300bn (US$1.9bn), Olusegun Aganga, Minister of Trade and Investment has said.
