Uganda-based Hima Cement (LafargeHolcim group) has seen its Kasese mining rights stripped from it after the High Court upheld a decision from 2013 to confer them to East African Gold Sniffing Company Ltd. Emami Cement looks to expand limestone mining capacity

India’s Emami Cement Ltd has announced plans to expand its limestone mining capacity from 5.5Mta to 9Mta at its operations in Kukurdih of Raipur district, Chhattisgarh. The project is expected to be spread over 395ha of land and represent an investment of INR10bn (US$144.35m). While environmental clearance is currently being awaited, work on the expansion is projected to begin by May 2020.

India’s Birla Corp has been restricted from mining limestone in Chittorgarh and near the Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary after a new order by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday. UltraTech Cement has emerged as the winner in the auction of Chhattisgarh’s Guma limestone block. Over 600 bids were made for the mine in an e-auction that lasted for 15 hours, according to The Times of India. UltraTech is investing INR600m (US$9.4m) in a new limestone mining project in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, India. The project, which received the go-ahead from the Environment Ministry earlier this month, involves an area of 632ha with a production capacity of 2.07Mta. Hetauda Cement Factory is facing a shortage of limestone due to local protestors preventing the extraction of the material from its mine in Majuwa, Nepal. According to reports in the Star newspaper, Borneo Oil has signed a 30-year deal enabling it to mine marble and limestone in Lahad Datu, Borneo. Shree Digvijay Cement Co is currently awaiting environmental clearance for the 0.35Mta (ROM) Pachhtardi limestone mining project near Pacchtardi village in Taluka Bhanvad, Gujarat. The mined limestone will be used for use at the company's cement manufacturing plant situated at Digvijaygram (Sikka), Devbhoomi Dwarka district. Mining will be by fully mechanised opencast method. The estimated cost of the project is INR50m (US$733,593).
