Cement shortage hits Ghana’s Cape Coast

A shortage of cement has been reported in the Cape Coast, central regional capital of Ghana as a result of faulty equipment at Tarkarodi Cement, according to local press reports. Retailers at Cape Code told City & Business Guide that customers are struggling to buy a bag of cement which is currently being sold for GHS18 instead of the previous GHS14. Kwame Mensah, a retailer at Sackey Cement Works said in an interview that they have not received cement since last week.

Pakistan exporters hike Afghanistan prices by 25%

Pakistani exporters have raised prices to Afghanistan by 25 per cent to US$50/t up from US$37-40/t, the Express Tribune reports. Mexican cement prices in December were noted to reach one of its highest peaks and the rise has continued into the new year, according to local press reports. The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has conducted a search and inspection of the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) premises as well as Kohat Cement offices in Lahore to seize documents which could confirm collusive activities in an alleged cement cartel. Spanish firms to pay fine on northern cartel

A number of Spanish cement companies have been imposed with a fine worth over EUR11.09m by Spanish competition watchdog, CNC, for setting up a cartel in northern Spain. Cements Portland was ordered to pay a fine of EUR5.72m, followed by Beriain (EUR2.5m), Cetya (EUR1.14m), Vresa (EUR959, 277) and Cemex Espana (EUR502, 283), Cinco Dias reported.

Ministry steps in to curb escalating Saudi prices

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry has intervened to curb a significant rise in cement prices in the western region of the country, Al Eqtisadiah business daily reports.
