Saudi Arabia to cut cement import duties

Saudi Arabia will cut duties on cement imports to five per cent from 20 per cent to help meet rising domestic demand, Saudi media said on Tuesday.  The lower duty will not be introduced until January 1 2006. The total export of cement and cement clinker of the whole year out of China  was 7Mt, a rise of 21.5 per cent on a year-on-year basis. The export mainly concentrated in North America, Asian countries, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, accounting for 92 per cent of the total export. Cypriot cement maker Vassiliko Cement Works has signed a contract with Interbulk Trading SA, a subsidiary of French cement maker Ciments Francais, for cement sales in 2005, the company announced on May 16, 2005.  Under the contract, Interbulk Trading will buy the quantities of Vassiliko cement which the company fails to sell on the Cypriot market in 2005. As Qatar’s construction sector still faces supply problems, Qatar’s top cement producer Qatar National Cement Co (QNCC) intends to make available some 2Mt of cement in the local market this year.
