15 February 2008

The Azerbaijani government forecasts doubling of cement demand in the country for the medium-term period.

Minister of economic development Heydar Babayev said that the high rate of economic growth and realization of a range of infrastructure and investment projects create pre-conditions for rise of cement demand in Azerbaijan.

“We estimate that for the next three years cement demand is to grow by AZN 3m as minimum,” he added.

Already today cement demand makes around 4Mta and is covered due to domestic production only by 40%.

“Remaining faithful to principles of market economy, the government will support projects aimed at increasing domestic output.

Azerbaijan Investment Company which belongs to the government is participating in expansion of capacity of the key cement producer,  Garadagh Cement OJSC, up to 1.7Mta. It is also preparing jointly with  Lafarge a project on the construction of a new 1Mta cement factory.
