Indonesia’s cement consumption fell 20 per cent to 2.50Mt in October from a month earlier due to the Eid-al Fitri holidays, said Urip Timuryono, chairman of the country’s cement producers association (ASI), Monday.

The Eid holidays were celebrated to mark the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. Most government offices and private companies were closed for nearly 10 days last month.

With a population of over 220Mt Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim nation.

"The drop is quite normal considering there was no delivery of cement for almost two weeks in October," Timuryono told Thomson Financial News.

Cement consumption in October was nearly 11 percent higher than a year ago, he said.

Consumption in the first ten months reached 27.7Mt, up of 7.5 per cent.
