Lafarge Boral Gypsum in Asia (LBGA), a 50/50 joint venture of  Lafarge SA and Australian peer Boral Limited will invest US$28m to build two plasterboard factories in China and India, Lafarge announced.

The first plant will be located in Chengdu in the Sichuan province, central China, while the second one will be built close to New Delhi, the capital of India.

The two facilities are expected to begin production in the first quarter of 2008. Each of the units will have a capacity of 10 million sq m of plasterboard annually.

The investment will enable Lafarge to significantly strengthen its presence in the high-potential markets of India and southwest China, the company said in a statement.

Lafarge already has four plaster manufacturing plants in China - two in Shanghai, eastern China, and two in Chongqing in the central part of the country.
