Cement producer Lafarge’s aggregate and ready-mix business has acquired the Mpumalanga aggregates quarry and ready-mix operations of White River Crushers.

Lafarge aggregate and ready-mix business MD Ulrich Aumuller tells Engineering News that the privately negotiated deal follows an acquisition of the Knysna quarry last year and that the company is looking at other expansion plans.

The operations will ultimately be held by Lafarge Mining, the unit under which the new aggregate business will operate and which will be 26% black empowered under a R1,1-billion empowerment deal Lafarge announced earlier this year.

“This acquisition will enable us to increase service levels, as well as to generate sizeable operational synergies between our existing operations and the newly-acquired quarry.

“It will also help fulfil the objectives of increasing market share and capacity in the region,” says Aumuller.
