Aizaz Mansoor Sheikh, chairman All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA), has said accelerated demand was witnessed for cement in the first quarter of the current financial year.

Total dispatches of cement during the quarter reached 5.414Mt compared to 4.474Mt in the corresponding period of last year, showing a growth of 20.99 per cent. Cement exports registered a growth of 53.72 per cent while domestic demand grew by 17.51 per cent.

During the period under review, capacity utilisation stood at 74.49 per cent from an expanded capacity base made available by the launch of new production lines of different companies and optimisation of production capability of others.

The APCMA appreciated the recent decision of the government to restore duty drawback on exports and withdraw subsidy on import of cement.
