USA: Orcem receives backlash over new plant
01 December 2016

Orcem America has said it wants to set up operations in Vallejo, California, opposite the Mare Island peninsula. Under Orcem’s proposal, slag would be brought in from Asia via the Mare Island Strait.

Despite the project providing a guaranteed 30 well-paid jobs to an area of economic plight, the plans have not been met positively by locals, who have raised concerns over the pollution and disturbance a cement plant in the locality may cause.

The planning commission is due to discuss the issue in February 2017 and if the plans are passed, it will be in the hands of the city council to make the final vote on approving or rejecting the project.
