Lucky Cement: Karachi expansion scheduled for end-2017

Lucky Cement Ltd is currently undergoing a series of investments in capex projects. Its 1.25Mta Karachi plant expansion poject is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2017, while the company is still in the process of seeking approvals and necessary authorisations for a 2.3Mta greenfield integrated cement plant in Punjab province. Company officials hope that construction at the Punjab site will start by the end of June 2017.
 
In addition, the 10MW waste heat and recovery (WHR) system at Lucky Cement's Pezu plant is currently in the testing and commissioning phase and is expected to commence operations soon.
 
The company has also carried out an EPC contract and finalised draft of the power purchase agreement for a 660MW coal-based power project. Lucky Cement will set up the implementation agreement and long-term coal supply agreement with Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC). The target is to achieve financial closure in May 2017 and commercial operation by June 2020.
 
Overseas projects
Lucky Cement announced that joint venture investment in cement plant in DR Congo having capacity of 1.18Mta has started commercial operations in December 2016.
 
The company's brownfield expansion of its cement grinding unit in Basrah in Iraq will raise the facility's grinding capacity to 0.871Mta and is expected to come online by August 2017.
