Ethiopian plants warned to fast-track outstanding deliveries

DMC prepares power supply for new project

Ethiopia-based Derba Midroc Cement (DMC) and Sinohydro Construction Ltd have signed an ETB330m (US$7.24m) contract for a power expansion project that will allow the factory to double production and receive sustainable energy. Messebo Cement resumes operations

Ethiopia’s Messebo Cement has now resumed production after suspending operations for four months due to fighting in the area. Melaku Alebel, Minister of Trade, has confirmed that the company has started supplying products to stabilise the cement market. While cement prices had spiked in recent weeks, following measures taken by the Ministry of Trade, the price has fallen to ETB420/100kg (US$10.14) from ETB600 in Addis Ababa.

Lemi National Cement Industrial Complex, a new private industrial park, is set to be built in the Amhara region of Ethiopia by private investors, according to The Swazi Observer. Mugher Cement Factory seeks production increase

Ethiopia’s Mugher Cement Factory will boost production to increase its share of the market, according to Takele Uma, minister of mines and petroleum. The minister stated that the state-owned cement factory’s current production volumes are disproportionate compared to the abundant natural resources in the area. Therefore, efforts will be made to improve production capacity and increase its market share above 25 per cent.

Ethiopia’s National Cement (East African Holdings) is currently conducting a study at its plant in Dire Dawa to boost its 3000tpd capacity by 30 per cent. To end the chronic shortage of cement in the market, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Trade and Industry has prepared a new guideline to introduce the private sector to the supply chain. The measure went into effect from 31 August 2020. Dangote Cement reported group revenue up two per cent to NGN476.9bn (US$1.23bn) in the 1H20. Group EBITDA rose to NGN218.1bn and pan-African EBITDA increased by 31.6 per cent to NGN31.5bn.
