Baltic CCS project gains EU recognition

A cement carbon capture project in Lithuania and Latvia has been granted Project of Common Interest (PCI) status by the European Commission, recognising it as a project that will significantly contribute to EU energy policy and climate goals, reports the Lithuanian News Agency. Schwenk Latvija opens new grinding plant

Schwenk Latvija has opened what it calls “one of Europe’s most sustainable grinding plants”. The new works at Brocēni  was commissioned in June 2022 and took just 20 months to complete. The grinding circuit, which was supplied by Christian Pfeiffer, produces high-quality cement such as CEM I 52.5R with up to 5600 Blaine.  

Schwenk Latvija reports 5% increase in turnover in 2021

Schwenk Latvija has reported a 4.9 per cent YoY increase in turnover in 2021. The company's turnover reached EUR96.455m, while profit came in at EUR16.118m, up 31.9 per cent YoY, according to Firmas.lv. 2021 saw Schwenk Latvija sell more than 1Mt of cement, of which over 75 per cent was exported, mainly to Finland, Estona and Sweden, reports Baltic Business Daily. Schwenk Zement plans to start operation of an additional cement mill and multichamber cement storage silo at its Broceni plant in Latvia at the end of this year. Cemex Latvia changes name to Schwenk Latvija

Following its recent acquisition by Germany-based Schwenk, Cemex Latvia will change its name to Schwenk Latvija, according to reports by the LETA news agency. Cemex generated a turnover of EUR86.92m in Latvia in 2018, an increase of 11.3 per cent from 2017. Annual profit amounted to EUR5.95m, compared to a loss in the previous year. The company sold over 1Mt of cement in 2018, of which 70 per cent was exported, mostly to Finland, Sweden and Estonia.

Cemex has announced that it has signed an agreement for the sale of assets in the Baltics and Nordics to Schwenk Zement for approximately EUR340m. The Baltic assets being divested consist of the 1.7Mta Broceni cement plant in Latvia, four aggregates quarries, two cement quarries, six ready-mix plants, one marine terminal and one land distribution terminal in Latvia. Cemex Latvia sold 0.97Mt of cement in 2017, generating at turnover 34.6 per cent higher at EUR78,067m, following an 18.5 per cent drop in the previous year. The share of exports rose to in excess of 70 per cent, while domestic deliveries were ahead. Sweden and Finland were the main export markets, followed by Estonia, Lithuania and Belarus.

Cemex generated EUR78.067m turnover in Latvia in 2017, up 34.6 per cent against 2016, selling 970,000t of cement, while the copany's share of export sales grew to 70 per cent.
