Nepal to be self-sufficient in cement production in 2019

The Cement Manufacturers' Association of Nepal claims that, while the import of clinker has increased due to high production demands, it expects the country to be self-reliant on clinker production from next year. Following a month-long renovation and upgrade, Nepal’s government-owned Udayapur Cement has resumed production. The renovation was the first in the plant’s 31-year history and cost NPR90m. "We've resumed our operations and have started to send our cement in the market," Surendra Paudel, the factory's general manager said, adding that they'd need to do maintenance in the next 10 years. Grinding specialist Gebr Pfeiffer has received the order for a coal grinding system to be installed at Samrat Cement Co Pvt Ltd’s new plant in the Dang region of southern Nepal. While the new kiln system will be supplied by KHD, the German contractor has ordered a MPS 225 BK coal mill from Gebr Pfeiffer to produce pulverised coal for the coal-fired kiln. Sagamartha Cement in Dang, Nepal, has been receiving complaints from workers that reported being paid NPR400/day (US$3.36), instead of the minimum wage of NPR517/day (US$4.34). "Middle persons are exploiting the workers labour with the support of the industry," said Bharat Bhattarai, a worker interviewed by Setopati. Workers have also not received contracts of employment and the 200-strong workforce have warned of strike action if the minimum wage is not guaranteed.

Hongshi Shivam Cement of Nepal has been supported by a consortium of five of Nepal's commercial banks who have approved credit of US$140.48m to the 6000tpd Nepal-China joint venture.
