Fall in Venezuelan output persists as plant improvements suffer delay

Cement production in Venezuela continues to decline with output at the Pertigalete plant of Venezolana de Cementos between 20-30 per cent of its total production capacity. Venezuela’s largest cement company, Venezolana de Cementos, saw production drop 13.1 per cent in 4Q13, according to data by the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV). The fall in output has been attributed to a range of factors, including unplanned shutdowns, lack of raw materials and other inputs as well as issues with packing equipment. Chavez authorises investment, company name change

Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chávez has authorised VEF43m (US$10m) to build a new quarry for cement production. The executive also approved changing the name of Cemex Venezuela to Venezolana de Cementos as well as measure to develop and strengthen the firm, according to a release from the national assembly. Last year, Cemex received US$600m in compensation from the Venezuelan government  for nationalization of the cement prouducer’s local works.
