Granulated Slag

Dear experts,

I should make Test to determine activity of granulated slag,  could you give me information about method  how to conduct this experiment.

Thank you in advance

The two modulus given below have high correlation to 7 and 28 day strength developments.

                                 CaO + MgO + Al2O3

                              ----------------------------       >      or equle to  1

                                          SiO2

                              CaO + 0.5 MgO + Al2O3 + CaSO4

                             ---------------------------------------------   >    or equle to 1.5

                                           SiO2 + MnO

This composition modulus is of importance for rapid quality control of cement slag.

For the purpose of assessing the contribution to strength made by slag a HYDRAULIC MODULUS is recommended.

To calculate this modulus one has to prepare

1   .Portland slag cement

2    Portland cement

3    Portland ground with quartz [ground to 4000 cm2/gm]

If the 28 day strength in 1 is A, 2 is B, 3 is C then

                                 70                         A - C

Hydraulic index at   [   ------   ]   =         -------------     X 100

30                                                B – C

{70/ 30 means the slag cement have 30% slags. If the slag is non hydraulic its effect should be similar to the inert ground sand and then index is zero. If it is cementious as Portland its index is 100 %.}

In practice the index found to very with proportion of slag present in the cement and it is not necessary the same with 50/50, 30/70, 70/30 mix.

The glass content, as determined by microscopy in slags quenched in different ways have been related to the strength values of respective slag cements. From the various studies reported it appears that influence of chemical composition on the hydrolic properties of the slag can be recognized much more clearly then the influence of glass content which is maintained at   90-95 %   level.

Fluorence of vitrous slags could be used for evaluation their hydraulicity. This is basically the measure of glass content. The index is given by

                                                             CaO

    % red fluorescing glass particle    X   ----------

                                                            SiO2
