Are you enquiring because you now need to improve strength above your traiditional level, or becuase there has been a recent drop in strength?

Hello Raju,

Some things to look at would be;-

1. Any significant change in the amounts of the clinker minerals (especially C3S & C2S)  and free lime. You would probably need to do a microscopic analysis or XRD to see if the actual mineral contents had changed, because such a change may not necessarily show up in the theoretical mineral content calculated according to Bogue.

2. A change in clinker mineral reactivity. eg harder burning will tend to decrease the hydraulic reactivity of the clinker minerals. Cement heat of hydration tests could give you some indication of this.

Ted is correct. In the meantime, while you carry out tests on the product, start to look at plant records to see if

quarry operations have changed or moved into a different geological zone;

any new ancillary items of equipment have come into use (including sensors and other instrumentation);

there has been a change to the supply of fuel, gypsum, grinding aid, tertiary raw materials, non-clinker additives to the cement mill, etc.;

a major plant item has had an overhaul or re-fit;

there has been a trend to operate with different process conditions before and after you produced the material for which the strength drop was eventually observed.
