Layoffs scheduled at Mitsubishi Cement plant

Layoffs scheduled at Mitsubishi Cement plant
02 December 2008

For the first time in 20 years layoffs are to be implemented at Mitsubishi Cement Corp’s Cushenbury Springs Plant, beginning Friday and lasting at least through the first week in January.

Despite best efforts to continue production through the end of the year, Mitsubishi Cement Vice President H.O. “Bud” Biggs said that as a result of the lack of new construction in the area, the product surplus at Mitsubishi is so large that the plant has run out of locations to store the material.

“Due to the continuing decline in sales volume and new environmental regulations that prevent us from storing additional (materials) outside, we will be forced to shut down our kiln operations ... and operate with a minimum work force,” Mitsubishi Cement President Kimball McCloud wrote in a memo to the plant’s employees.
