Total shipments of Portland and blended cement, including imports, in the USA and Puerto Rico amounted to 8.936Mt in May 2026, up 0.3 per cent YoY from the 8.913Mt recorded in May 2025.

Excluding for sales to Puerto Rico and overseas territories, cement consumption in the USA was unchanged versus the previous year, coming in at 8.804Mt.

The key producing states for Portland and blended cement were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Michigan, accounting for 38 of cement produced. The key consuming states were, in descending order, Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois, accounting for 38 per cent of cement consumed.

Blended cement shipments amounted to 5.714Mt in May, down 1.5 per cent YoY from 5.804Mt a year earlier, with Florida the leading consumer.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, amounted to 6.672Mt, up 3.2 per cent YoY from 6.465Mt a year earlier, with Missouri the leading producer.

Imports of cement and clinker amounted to 2.607Mt in May, up 4.1 per cent YoY from 2.505Mt in May 2025.

Imported clinker amounted to 132,132t, up from 32,888t a year earlier.

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement, including imports, in the USA and Puerto Rico amounted to 39.5Mt in the first five months of 2026 up four per cent YoY from the same period of 2025.

Excluding for sales to Puerto Rico and overseas territories, cement consumption in the USA was up 3.9 per cent YtD, coming in at 38.920Mt, compared to 37.448Mt a year earlier.

Blended cement shipments amounted to 24.913Mt in 5M26, up 5.6 per cent YoY from 23.601Mt in the same period of 2025.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, saw a 6.2 per cent YoY increase to 26.520Mt from 24.971Mt.

Imports of cement and clinker amounted to 10.016Mt in 5M26, up 2.2 per cent YoY from 9.805Mt. Türkiye accounted for 33 per cent of imports, followed by Vietnam with 24 per cent, Canada 16 per cent, Egypt seven per cent, Mexico four per cent and lesser amounts from a number of countries including Algeria, Greece, Pakistan, the UAE and Thailand.

Imported clinker amounted to 561,379t, up from 277,443t in 5M25. Türkiye accounted for 58 per cent of imports, Canada 33 per cent, France seven per cent, Vietnam two per cent, with smaller amounts from Croatia and China.

Outlook
While data centre construction will be the main boon to cement demand in the USA in 2026, residential construction will remain the key drag. The ACA expects “single family construction to continue struggling into 2027”. While new home sales in August rose at their fastest pace since December 2025, renewed monetary tightening by the US Federal Reserve in September will add to affordability concerns.
