The USG Supramax freight market showed elevated activity, with improved rates across all trades. The segment seemed to be in a good place as the US grain season started and further improvements are expected as the market moves into the 4Q26. Demand looked healthier, mostly on the trans-Atlantic routes. Bunker price volatility assisted the freight rate spikes.
Freight rates for transportation of a Supramax-lot of petcoke from Houston to ARA ports with spot laycans are at US$33/t on average. Deals for delivery of 50,000t of petcoke from Houston to Iskenderun with spot laycans are discussed at around US$42.50/t on average. Shipping costs for delivery of a Supramax-lot of petcoke from USG to EC India are at US$63/t on average.
The 4Q26 is continuously discussed as a phase of strength, and players anticipate the rest of the year to remain positive and firm. More fresh activity is required to guide the upward corrections, but the sentiment is bullish overall.
