Holcim has placed an order with SaltX Technology for an expanded development programme covering its electrified clinker-production process.
The programme will include further material testing, process and technology optimisation, followed by grinding of the resulting clinker and evaluation of its performance in cement and concrete. The work extends the collaboration beyond clinker manufacture towards validating the material for downstream applications.
The order follows trials announced in April 2026, when the companies reported producing Portland-quality clinker using a fully electrified process. SaltX’s technology is intended to replace fossil-fuelled heating during clinker production with electricity while facilitating the separation of process CO2.
SaltX said the latest programme would support continued development towards a joint European demonstration plant for electrified clinker production. However, the company described the order as strategically significant while noting that its financial contribution would be limited.
No value, testing schedule or proposed location for the demonstration plant was disclosed.
