Algeria: Cevital to build 8Mta cement plant

The Cevital group, owned by Issad Hebrab, plans to build a greenfield cement plant in Algeria. The country’s National Investment Council has validated the project and technical studies have started, according to Mr Hebrab in El Watan. Saoura Ciment, a subsidiary of GICA, is currently carrying out negotiations with a Chinese partner to realise the Ben-Zireg cement plant, in Bechar, according to its director general. Sinoma has been awarded its second cement plant project in Algeria as the Lafarge-Souakri joint venture signed the turnkey contract for its Djamoura works in Biskra. The new works will have a production capacity of nearly 3Mta and represents an initial investment of DZD32bn (US$0.4bn). PPC has reported a two per cent rise in cement sales for the six months ending March 2014. Revenue came in at ZAR4.16bn (US$0.4bn), an increase of nine per cent on the same period last year. EBITDA was also up by five per cent to ZAR1.17bn, while operating profit jumped 15 per cent to ZAR1.36bn. Fives FCB signed a contract with Entreprise des Ciments et Dérivés d’El Chellif (ECDE), part of Ciments d’Algérie (GICA) related to the extension of a third production line at the Chelf cement plant, Algeria. Société des Ciments de Sigus (SCS) has received bids from French, Danish and Chinese bidders to build its new cement works in Oum-El-Bouaghi, Algeria. Algeria sees decline in January imports

Algerian cement imports fell 13.6 per cent YoY during January 2014 as the value of imports fell from US$26.79m to US$23.16m. In terms of volumes, January saw cement imports contracted from 326.79t to 266.87t. Algeria expects to cease cement imports in four years’ time as it develops its national production capacity, said the country’s Minister for Industrial Development and Investment Promotion, Amara Benyounes in a recent statement.
