Cement imports into Algeria soared nearly 86 per cent to US$211.59m in the 1H13 when compared with the previous year’s US$113.78m, according to the country’s national statistics office, CNIS. Cement imports into Algeria reached US$159.4m in the first five months of 2013, representing a 102 per cent rise when compared with the equivalent period of 2012, according to the National Information and Statistics Centre of the Algerian Customs. In terms of volumes, a 105 per cent rise was noted with tonnage reaching 1.791Mt. The rise is due to the launch of new projects and the resumption of public construction work since the start of spring.

Algerian cement company Gica launched a tender for the importation of 1.5Mta of cement with the first delivery of 0.95Mt due early July. Cement imports into Algeria have almost doubled in 2012, according to the National Customs Centre for Informatics and Statistics (CNIS). The import value of construction cement, which encompasses five types, rose 94.67 per cent in 2012, from US$125.537m to US$244.4m, according to a CNIS report. The Lafarge-owned Oggaz cement plant, in Mascara, Algeria, achieved a new production and sales record for grey cement in 2012. The first 11 months of 2012 saw Algeria increase its cement imports by 91.95 per cent, according to Algerian customs figures. In terms of value, imports rose from US$117.4m to US$225.4m while in terms of volumes, the advance reached 96.61 per cent from 1.267Mt to 2.492Mt. The high demand for the product, particularly in the dry season from March to August, has been the main cause of this import hike. The country currently has a cement deficit of over 2.5Mta.
