Cementir Holding's turnover in 2017 increased by 25.3 per cent to EUR1287.5m and EBITDA was ahead by 11.5 per cent to 220.5m. Building collapses at Holcim Obourg

A collapse of a building near one of the kilns of Holcim’s 1.4Mta Obourg plant in Belgium on 23 May has resulted in the death of one worker and the closure of the plant as an investigation takes place into the causes of the collapse. Gebr Pfeiffer awarded Cemminerals grinding contract

Grinding specialist Gebr Pfeiffer was awarded the order for a grinding plant for slag and cement by Cemminerals NV. The Belgian cement producer is in the process of establishing a new grinding unit at the Kluizendok in the port of Ghent. Danish cement company Aalborg Portland has acquired Belgian cement company Compagnie des Ciments Belges (CCB) for DKK2.30bn (US$349.81m). The acquisition increases Aalborg Portland's operations by 20 per cent and boosts its turnover from DKK6.5bn posted in 2015 to over DKK8bn. Belgium: appeal court overturns competition watchdog fines

Holcim, CBR, CCB and Febelcem, the Belgian cement association, have seen the competition watchdog’s judgment to pay a EUR14.7m fine overturned by the Belgian Court of Appeal. The competition authority fined the cement majors and the association for the alleged formation of a cartel to reduce competition in the domestic market, but the Court of Appeal found that such illegal practices did not occur.

Belgian cement demand increased 4.6 per cent YoY to 6,403,460t, according to Febelcem, the country's cement association. The rise was supported by good weather and a positive new housing market. HeidelbergCement is to start a project capturing CO 2 at its Lixhe plant in Belgium. The five-year project is being led by the Low Emissions Intensity Lime and Cement consortium, which includes the Australian technology company Calix, HeidelbergCement, and other lime and cement producers, says Aggregate Research.
