New South Sulawesi cement plant planned, Indonesia

A new cement plant is being planed in Barru, South Sulawesi involving an investment of US$400m, according to executive director of the PT Fajar Semen Baru project, James Martin. According to Indonesian press reports, the venture will involve participation from two cement companies in German and Taiwan and funding is to be sourced from a local consortium of banks. The cement plant is slated to have a capacity of 3.3Mta and, once operational, will serve eastern Indonesia.

Vietnam-based producer Thang Long Cement JSC plans to double monthly cement exports to Cambodia from its Hiep Phuoc grinding plant to 10,000 due to increased demand in the neighbouring market. Fuelled by rising housing demand and subsequent property development, Indonesia saw cement sales increase 12% through the first seven months of the year, according to the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI). PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa has said it will continue to raise capacity to meet increasing domestic demand with three new factories planned to come on-stream by 2016. The new facilities are to be built in Citereup (West Java), Pati (Central Java) and another outside Java. Indonesia's domestic cement sales rose 9.9 per cent in July from a year ago, up from 9.5 per cent in June, data from the country's biggest cement firm PT Semen Gresik Tbk showed on Monday.     Southeast Asia's biggest economy consumed more than 4.8Mt of cement in July, up 7.2 per cent on a monthly basis. PT Semen Gresik said Friday its first-half net profit rose 12% to IDR2.10trn (US$221m) from IDR1.87 trillion a year earlier. Revenue for the January-June period rose to IDR8.66trn from IDR7.61trn a year earlier. Its assets totaled IDR22.28trn as of June 30, compared with IDR19.66trn a year earlier.

Siam Cement PCL, Thailand's largest conglomerate, has announced plans to invest around THB10bn (US$315m) to build a cement plant in Indonesia, President and Chief Executive Kan Trakulhoon said Wednesday. The planned investment is part of the company's five-year investment budget worth around THB200bn, Fox Business Reports, which is due to be proposed to the company's board for consideration in August, he said.
