Pakistan FDI increases substantially

Pakistan's cement industry received US$6.3m in foreign direct investment (FDI) between the July 2012-March 2013 period, the country's Central Bank reported on 16 April. The amount is 294 per cent more than the corresponding period of the previous year (July 2011-March 2012), when FDI was US$1.6m.

Pakistan cement dispatches rise on increased exports

Pakistan reported a rise in dispatches last month led by gains in export volumes but domestic sales were subdued. Latest data from the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers’ Association show cement dispatches reached 3.326Mt last month, of which 2.558Mt was consumed by the domestic market and 0.786Mt exported. Pakistan-based Thatta Cement Company Limited (TCCL) has signed an agreement with Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) for the construction of a grinding plant as well as a storage and bagging facility. Pakistan cement producers have denied the existence of a cement cartel, telling the Ministry of Industries that they are operating at the lowest rate of return. Pakistan exports rise 24% YoY in value

Pakistan has reported flat growth in export sales in terms of volume for the first eight months of fiscal 2012-13, but a strong advance has been reported in terms of value thanks to improvements in the price per tonne of cement. Lafarge Pakistan Cement (LCP) has earned a net profit after tax of PKR1.488bn (US$15.17m) for the year ending 31 December 2012, compared to a loss of PKR118.42m in the previous year. Net sales rose PKR9.624bn last year from PKR7.804bn, reflecting a growth of 23.32 per cent. The cost of sales stood at PKR6.44bn against PKR6.148bn in 2011.
