Philippine cement sales rise 7.1% on stronger government spending

Cement sales in the Philippines increased by 7.1 per cent to 14.9Mt from 13.9Mt in the same period of last year, according to the country’s cement association, CeMAP. Holcim Philippines has reported a 34.2 per cent increase in third-quarter earnings driven by stronger sales revenue and cost-cutting and efficiency improvement measures. Cement sales in the first six months increased 6.18 per cent to 10.13Mt  from 9.54Mt in 2012, the Cement Manufacturer’s Association of the Philippines said. The group attributed the healthy performance to the country’s improving construction business and to the government’s ongoing infrastructure programme. Philippine cement sales rose 8.8 per cent in the second quarter of 2013, data from the Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) showed yesterday. Sales in the second quarter increased to 5.349Mt sold from 4.915Mt in the same period last year. Cement sales in the first half of the year also rose by 6.2 per cent to 10.136Mt from 9.546Mt in the corresponding period of the year before.

San Miguel Corp plans Philippine expansion

Philippine conglomerate San Miguel Corp (SMC) plans to invest in new manufacturing facilities to increase its market share. Company president Ramon Ang said SMC has invested in Northern Cement Corp (NCC) which is establishing a 2Mta line in Pangasinan. Anticipating an increase in demand for cement in the country, Cemex Philippines is embarking on a PHP2.5bn (US$58m) expansion of Apo Cement Corp’s facility in Naga City, Cebu.
