Unye Cimento to open Romanian branch

Turkish cement producer Unye Cimento Sanayi ve Ticaret is to open a branch for the import, export and sale of bulk and bagged cement in Romania’s Black Sea town of Mangalia, the company said. The branch will take over the operations of the company’s Romanian unit Unye Cem SRL, Unye Cimento said in a bourse filing on Tuesday, without providing further details.

Swiss building materials producer Holcim’s cement and clinker sales fell 0.7 per cent in the first half of the year in Romania, compared to the first six months of 2012, while the domestic cement prices were up 3.1 per cent, according to the company’s latest report. Lafarge Romania expects the domestic market to grow by 2-5 per cent this year mainly on the back of infrastructure works. Lafarge’s Romania unit has announced that Sonia Artinian has been appointed its country CEO as of 1 January 2012. Ms Artinian is responsible for Lafarge’s cement, aggregates and concrete business in Romania, Lafarge Romania said in a press release on Tuesday. Ms Artinian has worked for Lafarge since 2008. She replaces Philippe Questiaux, who had managed Lafarge’s cement activity in Romania for 10 years, the company added.

Holcim has filed a lawsuit against Romania’s carbon registry for damages relating to EUR1m allowances that were stolen from the company in a hacking attack in 2010, Reuters reports.
