A price ceiling on cement has been fixed by the Omani government to prevent exploitation by retailers as demand rises.  The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has fixed the cement price at 1.5 riyals per bag outside Muscat and Dhofar from September.  "The decision was made after it was agreed with producers not to raise prices in response to the rise in demand for local cement," the ministry said. Egypt’s Minister of Finance, Youssef Boutros-Ghali, and the Sudanese Minister of Industry, Jalal Yousif al-Dagir, discussed ways of boosting the trade relations between the two countries and the possibilities to raise the exports of Egyptian cement to Sudan, it was reported on August 24, 2004. During the talks, held as part of al-Dagir’s visit to the Egyptian capital Cairo, Boutros-Ghali called upon the Sudanese side to decrease the customs duties on Egypt’s cement exports.

Three of the cement plants in the UAE emirate of Ras al-Khaimah have imported a shipment of a total 31,500 tonnes of cement in mid-August 2004, the emirate’s Customs and Ports Department director general, Mohammad al-Mehrizi, said.  The cement was imported by Gulf Cement Company, Ras al-Khaimah Cement Company and Union Cement and has been unloaded at Ras al-Khaimah Port, al-Mehrizi added. Solid Cement Corp, a Philippine unit of Mexico’s Cemex said it may have to shut down its cement plant next week unless the government lifts its order for the company to stop selling its products.
