Central American cement trade falls 14% in 9M16

The total value of traded hydraulic cements in Central American countries fell 14 per cent from US$56m to US$48m in the first nine months of 2016, according to CentralAmericaData. Gambia’s government has announced a lowering of import tariffs on cement. The supplementary tax of GAD1/kg of cement as well as the five per cent tax levied on cement imports has been lifted.

Holcim (Argentina) approves clinker imports

Holcim (Argentina) has approved the import of up to six vessels of clinker for the period up to April 2018 via LH Trading, according to a company statement. The shipments represents some 250,800t of clinker with an approximate value of US$16.3m. The imports, which are expected to start in May, will help the company to meet growing demand as the country sees increased construction activity. LafargeHolcim’s Argentinian subsidiary has a production capacity of 4.8Mta.

Brazil 1Q cement sales down 8% YoY

Cement sales in Brazil during the first quarter of 2017 declined by eight per cent YoY to 12.9Mt, according to the latest data from Sindicato Nacional da Indústria do Cimento (SNIC). Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in January 2017 totalled about 5.4Mt, up by 2.9 per cent YoY, latest data from the USGS shows. Saudi Arabia has contributed US$80m towards reconstructing Gaza homes destroyed during the 2014 Israeli military bombing, Minister of Housing, Mufeed Hasayneh, said on Thursday. Peru's cement market contracted 6.9 per cent YoY with sales of 0.737Mt in February, according to Asocem, the country's cement producers' association. In 2016 the Zimbabwean government introduced a 25 per cent duty on every 100t of imported cement to discourage cheap imports. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the USA and Puerto Rico in December were 6.04Mt, representing a 8.6 per cent YoY fall, according to the US Geological Survey.
