Peru’s cement dispatches edged up 0.6 per cent YoY to 0.777Mt in July 2017, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Domestic supply was supplemented by 100t of imported cement and 44,400t of imported clinker. Output from the country’s cement plants fell 1.2 per cent YoY to 0.827Mt in July. Domestic cement sales in Brazil fell by 10.5 per cent in July 2017 to 4.7Mt compared to July 2016, according to data from SNIC, Brazil's national cement industry association. Cement imports surge in Costa Rica

The import of cement into Costa Rica has skyrocketed in the past two years, according to El Financiero Costa Rica. In 2014 the Latin American country imported 10,418t of cement but in 2016 this figure had increased more than tenfold to 107,294t. The steep rise has been particularly noted since 2015, when the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce (MEIC) changed the regulations regarding hydraulic cements, changing storage conditions and the flexibility of the marketing period. ...

Argentine cement consumption edged up one per cent MoM and 19.8 per cent YoY in July 2017. Demand reached 1,016,590t. Imports surged from 982t in July 2016 to 8692t one year later. Pacific Cement Ltd (PCL) is to import 25,000t of cement from Vietnam to address shortages on the island of Fiji. Market demand continues to be higher than the output of Fiji’s two cement producers, PCL and Tengy Cement Ltd. Steppe Cement reported a 15 per cent decline in volumes for the first half of 2017 while turnover was up by four per cent over the same period as the Kazakhstan-based producer focussed on pricing. Argentina’s cement market expanded 4.1 per cent MoM to 1,007,450t in June, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. When compared with June 2016, the increase reached 17.2 per cent.
