Bolivia’s cement producers demand Peruvian cement import ban

Bolivian cement producers are demanding a government ban on the import of Peruvian cement and clinker by Cemento Yura. In addition, they expect the Bolivian government to raise tariffs for clinker imports and take other measures against unfair competition in the market by Cemento Itacamba.

Argentine cement market expands 9% YoY in May

Argentina’s cement demand increased 9.8 per cent YoY to 967,695t, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. The rise in consumption is mainly attributable to an increase in bulk cement, which was up 28 per cent YoY, offsetting a three per cent dip in bagged sales. Cement imports from India to Nepal have doubled over the first 10 months of the current fiscal, according to a report in the Himalayan Times. The Fijian government has announced that cement can now be imported from overseas at zero-rated duty, according to local press reports. Peru’s cement dispatches fell 10 per cent to 0.73Mt in April when compared with April 2016, when 0.811Mt were delivered, according to the country's cement producers' association, Asocem. In the first four months of 2017, Brazilian cement sales to the domestic market totalled 17Mt, according to preliminary data from Sindicato Nacional da Indústria do Cimento (SNIC). Argentina saw a 18.1 per cent MoM drop to 845,690t in dispatches (including exports) in April but noted a 10.7 per cent rise YoY, according to the country’s Portland Cement Manufacturers’ Association.
