Dangote Cement is planning a number of new investments in Ethiopia, where it currently has a 2.5Mta plant, located in Mugher. Around US$19m is being spent on a new bagging plant with a capacity of 120m bags/year, which is due for completion by mid-2017. Portland and blended cement shipments in the USA fell 8.4 per cent to 6.039Mt in December 2016 from 6.59Mt in December 2015, according to preliminary data from the US Geological Survey (USGS). US producers delivered 5.423Mt to domestic markets, down 8.3 per cent from the year-ago period, when they shipped 5.916Mt. Meanwhile imports dropped to 616,423t from 674,530t in December 2015. Algeria sees sharp drop in cement imports in 2016

Algerian cement imports fell 35.5 per cent in 2016 from a value of US$474.3m to US$306.1m. In volume terms, a 27.4 per cent decrease was reported to 4.8Mt. In 2015 Algeria imported 6.6Mt of cement. Imports of other building materials such as iron and steel have also seen decreases.

Argentina sees cement dispatches up 1.2% YoY in January 2017

Argentina’s cement market expanded by 1.2 per cent YoY in January 2017 as cement sales reached 868,590t from 858,496t the year before, according to the country's cement association, AFCP. Sri Lanka: production and imports spike in 9M16

Sri Lanka's combined cement production and imports were up 28.4 per cent YoY to 6.5Mt by October 2016, indicating a strong recovery in the construction sector. Domestic production was up 17.5 per cent (334,000t) to 2.24Mt, according to central bank data. Import volumes were up 35 per cent (1.1Mt) to 4.2Mt. In 2015 domestic production expanded 21 per cent to 2.28Mt, but imports fell 1.4 per cent to 4.09Mt. Total cement production and imports rose only 5.8 per cent to 6.78Mt in 2015.

Swaziland: cement industry threatened by imports

Cement imports are undercutting cement produced by AfriSam Swaziland in price and present a risk to the viability of the domestic cement producer, according the Times of Swaziland. Pacific Basin's bulk carrier Port Botany from Japan arrived in Suva Port in Fiji yesteday ahead of its job of unloading 26,000t of clinker. The vessel will discharge its clinker load over the next six days. "The discharging will start soon after Custom Officers have checked teh vessel," said Mr Sowani Tuidrola of Pacific Basin. Portland and blended cement shipments by US producers to the domestic market in October 2016 reached 8,012,653t, according to preliminary figures of the US Geological Survey (USGS).
