Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico increased 5.7 per cent YoY to 5.752Mt in January 2018, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The top five cement markets were Texas, California, Florida, Arizona and Georgia (in descending order), which accounted for around 51 per cent of total shipments. Cement consumption in Argentina increased 6.2 per cent in March 2018 to 1,091,121t from 1,027,094t in March 2017, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. When compared with the previous month, sales to the domestic market advanced 18.1 per cent from 924,085t in February 2018. Gambian cement shortage leads to vendor price hikes

Gambian cement producers, have denied being responsible for the recent price hikes in cement prices. Both Gacem and Salam Cement expressed their surprise at the retail prices. Many vendors sell the commodity between GMD300 to GMD320/bag (US$6.3-6.7/bag). Cement demand in Peru increased by 1.4 per cent YoY in February 2018 to 0.824Mt from 0.812Mt, according to the latest data by Asocem, the country’s cement association. Philippine cement company Phinma Corp has recently imported 50,000t of cement, or approximately two million bags, from Vietnam with plans to import the same volume per quarter to a total of 200,000tpa as it breaks into the Philippines market. The All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) reports that the domestic cement industry's capacity utilisation in the first eight months of this fiscal year ( July 2017-Feb 2018) stood at 91 per cent of the total installed capacity of the sector. Argentine cement consumption increased 15.6 per cent YoY in February 2018, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. Total volumes sold on the domestic market rose to 924,075t, up from 799,340t in February 2017 but down 11.5 per cent when compared with January 2018, when sales reached 1,043,732t. Peruvian cement producer Inversiones en Cemento (Invercem) plans the construction of cement plants in Pisco and Ayacucho, according to its founder Victor de La Torre. Peru's cement consumption expanded five per cent to 0.861Mt in January 2018 when compared with the previous year, but fell eight per cent MoM, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem.
