Hazardous powder may be used in cement production

18 April 2018, Published under Cement News

The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has sent samples of a hazardous black powder to a Gujarat-based manufacturer to ascertain whether it can be used in the production of cement, according to The Times of India. This is the latest development in the UPPCB’s mission to safely dispose of 25,586m 3 of powder which is currently along the banks of the Ramganga River, Moradabad. "We have sent black powder samples to the company with a request to use it in manufacturing cement. Be...

Maharashtra government plans to give away fly ash for free

15 March 2018, Published under Cement News

Following its adoption of the fly ash utilisation policy last year, the Maharashtra government is now planning to give away the material for free. At its first meeting held on Tuesday, the Fly Ash Council told the state power generation company, Mahagenco, to work out how to provide the material to industries within 100km of its power plant, according to The Indian Express. "It has been observed that industries are discouraged from buying fly ash because of high transportation cost. Giving...

Rapid screening

28 February 2018, Published under Cement News

Traditional screening methods to evaluate the quality of natural pumiceous pozzolans for cement production are not entirely compatible with a production process that requires a steady pace in the supply of high-quality raw materials. To help increase the speed of this evaluation, Cementos Progreso developed a rapid screening method using XRD analysis to determine the hydraulic activity index of pumiceous pozzolanic materials. By Luis Velásquez, Roberto Diaz, Carmela Barrientos and Elvis Garc...

Foreign producers may find Ethiopian raw materials difficult to secure

16 February 2018, Published under Cement News

Cement companies in Ethiopia may in future need mining rights from local regional governments as well as Central government to excavate raw materials.  The administration of the East Shewa Zone with the Oromia region, for example, has written to foreign cement firms that mine pumice for cement production to cede some of their operations to the cooperatives of unemployed youths in their areas. Raw material microscopy

30 October 2017, Published under Cement News

Microscopical methods are key tools in the assessment of potential raw materials to be used in the production of high-quality cement. This month ICR considers the use of optical microscopy in the determination of the mineral composition of the rocks under investigation. Figure 1: kiln feed viewed in plain-polarised light Assessment of potential raw materials involves many lines of enquiry. The chemical composition, geological variation, accessibility and consistency are essentia...

Cemex participates in cross-sector EPOS project

15 September 2017, Published under Cement News

Cemex is participating in the European Union supported EPOS project designed to foster cross-sector industrial symbiosis. The project will highlight case studies exemplifying ways for companies to use wastes from other industries to deliver greater efficiency, save raw materials and contribute to more sustainable processes. Cemex’s South Ferriby cement plant in the UK has already worked with the UK-based INEOS chemical company, to determine how waste from INEOS’s production could be used ...
