Paraguay sees unexpected uptick in demand

Paraguay-based Industria Nacional del Cemento (INC) saw an unexpected surge in demand between 4-8 May 2020 with average sales of 79,755 bags/day as distribution companies collected a backlog of deliveries and bought extra volumes as they anticipated the easing of lockdown measures. INC had to buy 40,000t of imported clinker recently, according to Esmerk Latin American News. In April 2020 sales plummeted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cement consumption in Indonesia fell by 6.3 per cent YoY in April 2020 to 4.514Mt from 4.816Mt In April 2019, according to data published by the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI). Chilean cement demand drops 7% in 1Q20

After remaining largely stable at 332,905t  in February 2020 when compared with February 2019, Chile’s cement market contracted by 13.6 per cent YoY in March to 344,098t from 398,132t in March 2019, according to the Chilean Chamber of Construction and Cement (CChC). In the first quarter of 2020, dispatches were down 6.7 per cent YoY to 1,007,786t from 1,080,074t in the 1Q19.

Brazil cement consumption declines 7% in April

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement, including imports, in the USA and Puerto Rico advanced 13 per cent YoY in February 2020 to 6.4Mt, reports the US Geological Survey (USGS). Cement consumption in Argentina dropped 55.2 per cent YoY and 19.7 per cent MoM in April 2020 to 403,652t from 900,938t in April 2019, according to the latest data by the country’s cement association, AFCP. Production in domestic cement plants fell by 55.1 per cent to 407,645t in February 2020 from 908,737t in the equivalent period of the previous year. The Gabon cement market expanded 8.5 per cent YoY to 529,814t in 2019 on the back of strong domestic demand and sales saw a 9.7 per cent YoY increase to XAF39.6bn (US$65.3m), according to data from the country’s Directorate General of the Economy and Fiscal Policy. Morocco’s cement deliveries saw 55.5 per cent drop to 552,472t in April 2020 from 1,241,463t in April 2019, according to the members of the country’s cement association, APC. In the first four months of 2020, dispatches declined by 20.6 per cent to 3.919Mt from 4.808Mt in the 4M2019. APC members are Votorantim-owned Asment Temara, Ciments de l’Atlas, Ciments du Maroc (HeidelbergCement) and LafargeHolcim Maroc with a combined cement capacity of approximately 24Mta.

Cement dispatches in Colombia fell by 28.6 per cent to 739,700t in March 2020 from 1,035,800t in March 2019, according to the latest data by the country’s statistics agency, DANE. Vietnamese producers supplied 6,508,053t of cement to the domestic market in March 2020, according to the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA). This represents a decrease of one per cent YoY but a 55 per cent MoM rise.
