Cement sales in Puerto Rico declined 8.5 per cent YoY to 1.2m bags of 94lb, or 51,165t, in April 2023, according to the country’s Institute of Statistics. However, in May 2023 the market expanded by 5.7 per cent YoY to 1.4m bags, or 59,693t. In the year-to-date, approximately 6.4m bags of cement have been sold in Puerto Rico. Cement dispatches in Chile declined 4.2 per cent YoY to 299,858t in April 2023 from 313,101t in April 2022, according to the country’s construction chamber, CChC. In the January-April 2023 period cement sales were down 8.9 per cent YoY to 1,225,919t from 1,345,102t in the 4M22.

Brazilian cement market expands 1% in May

Cement sales in Brazil (excluding imports) increased by 1.2 per cent to 5.56Mt in May 2023, when compared with 5.494Mt in May 2022, according to the Brazilian cement association, SNIC. The northern market saw the biggest increase, by 8.3 per cent YoY, to 234,000t, followed by the south, where the uptick was 3.9 per cent YoY to 975,000t. The Argentine cement market contracted 1.5 per cent YoY to 1,072,110t in May 2023, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. In May 2022 domestic consumption reached 1,088,000t. However, MoM demand was up 4.2 per cent from 1,028,598t in April 2023. Market demand was entirely supplied by domestic production, which contracted two per cent YoY from 1,098,484t to 1,076,287t in May 2023. Cement deliveries in Morocco saw a 25.7 per cent advance to 1,189,110t in May 2023 from 945,706t in May 2022, reported the country’s Ministry of National Territory Planning, Land Planing, Housing and City Policy, based on APC data. Total shipments of Portland and blended cements, including imports, in the USA and Puerto Rico declined by six per cent YoY to 8.7Mt in March 2023, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).  Of the total blended volume reported, 3.2Mt, or 96 per cent, was estimated to be Portland limestone cement (Type IL). Grey cement dispatches in Colombia declined 9.3 per cent YoY to 0.987Mt in April 2023 from 1.089Mt in April 2022, according to the country’s statistics agency, DANE. Cement consumption in Spain dropped 11.6 per cent YoY to 1,182,325t in April 2023, according to the Spanish cement association, Oficemen. Cement sales in Vietnam saw a 14 per cent YoY decline to 5,621,586t in April 2023, according to the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA). Of this total, VICEM sales fell by 14 per cent to 1,834,092t while other VNCA members reported a 28 per cent drop in aggregate sales to 1,077,494t.
