Argentina’s market contracts 2% in January

Argentina’s cement market saw a two per cent contraction to 877,200t in January 2022 when compared with January 2021 when sales reached 895,416t, reports the country’s cement association, AFCP. When compared with the previous month, the drop was 14.4 per cent from 1,025,197t. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement, including imports, in the USA and Puerto Rico saw a 9.2 per cent YoY hike to 9.4Mt in November 2021, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Cement consumption in Spain increased 11 per cent YoY to 15Mt in 2021, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. Cement production in Italy increased by eight per cent in October 2021 but slipped six per cent in November when compared with the base year of 2015, according to Federbeton, Italy’s concrete association. South African cement imports up 19% in 11M21

Cement imports into South Africa surged to their highest level in 2021 as they reached 161,555t in November despite the government drive to use domestically-produced product and banning imported cement from public sector construction projects. In October 2021 imports were significantly lower at 34,964t, down from 151,452t in the previous month. In the 11M21 imports volumes expanded 18.7 per cent YoY to 1.097Mt with product coming mainly from Vietnam and Pakistan.
