Paraguay’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC) said it is lifting restrictions on cement imports following the shortage of the product due to production issues. The Paraguayan market requires a supply of 100,000 bags of cement per day. Argentine cement consumption fell 8.8 per cent YoY to 948,930t in October 2019, from 1,040,317t in October 2018, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. Following the import ban on grey cement in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), importers have taken more creative ways to import cement into the central African country. According to reports by Agence d’Information d’Afrique Centrale, grey cement is now imported via canoe on the Congo River to the main consumption centres in the country. Local producers have protested, citing unfair competition, import fraud and a low product quality as the main reasons for their grievances.

Peru’s cement consumption increased 6.5 per cent to 1.035Mt in September 2019 when compared with September 2018, according to Asocem, the country’s cement association.
