The first 1000t of CO2 has been captured, liquefied and stored at its Norcem AS Brevik cement plant in Norway, according to Heidelberg Materials. This is a significant step in ramping up the world’s first full-scale carbon capture facility in cement production.

Since the mechanical completion of the plant in December 2024, Heidelberg Materials’ team has been hard at work commissioning the facility and testing it under real conditions. “This milestone shows we’re making steady progress toward stable operations and the production of evoZero – a game-changing cement that will enable net-zero concrete and support the decarbonisation of the construction sector,” claimed Heidelberg Materials.

“It’s encouraging to see this important step achieved, along with the strong commitment from the team – it shows the steady progress we’re making in developing a truly groundbreaking facility right here in Norway,” says Giv K Brantenberg, Heidelberg Materials’ general manager in northern Europe.

The plant will now continuously ramp up its carbon capture to 0.4Mta.
