Sweden-based SaltX Technology reported further progress in fully electrified cement production during the second quarter of 2026, including industrial-scale testing with Holcim and new EU funding.
SaltX and Holcim successfully produced Portland-quality clinker using a fully electrified process. Holcim raw meal was calcined at industrial scale and subsequently sintered using SaltX's clinker electrification technology, meeting established material quality requirements.
Industrial-scale testing of electrified precalcination has also begun at SaltX's research facility in Hofors, Sweden, with the first test period producing promising results.
SaltX, Holcim and Paebbl have also secured EU funding through the CET Partnership for a demonstration project combining electrified clinker production with the permanent binding of captured CO2 in building materials. The project will be carried out at Hofors.
The programme will initially focus on electrified precalcination, with electric sintering added subsequently. SaltX and Holcim aim to develop a joint pilot leading towards what SaltX describes as the world's first fully-electric cement plant in Europe by 2028.
SaltX reported 2Q26 net sales of SEK5.9m (US$0.62m), down from SEK21.2m a year earlier, when revenue included a SEK20m one-off licence payment. The operating loss widened to SEK22.9m from SEK1.8m.
