China's new emission limits

12 March 2014, Published under Cement News

The co-processing of wastes in cement kilns could offer a safe option to reduce China’s growing waste management issue. However, the development of standards and guidelines reflecting international practice is key to the sustainable co-processing of such wastes. Recognising its importance, the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection recently revised and updated emission standards for co-processing in cement plants. Czech market declines expected to ease in 2014

03 March 2014, Published under Cement News

Cement consumption in the Czech Republic is expected to see another fall in 2014, but the pace of decline is set to ease, according to the head of Lafarge Czech Republic. Cement demand in the Czech Republic reached a high of 5.18Mt in 2008, but the onset of the global financial crisis has resulted in five consecutive years of decline and consumption by end-2012 was down to 3.389Mt. Speaking to CTK press, Janusz Miluch, CEO of the Lafarge unit, said that total domestic cement sales dropped ...

Maximising AF usage

25 February 2014, Published under Cement News

While the use of alternative fuels (AF) continues to increase, the desired targets always pose challenges as the price and properties of waste-derived fuels vary. Therefore, a better understanding of AF utilisation is essential to mitigate any potential negative effects on kiln stability, product quality and emissions. The case study detailed below highlights the effectiveness of using MI-CFD as an engineering tool to reduce CO emissions when AF is co-fired with coal at the kiln front-end. B...

Cemex in tyre agreement with General Motors

12 February 2014, Published under Cement News

Cemex has reached an agreement with General Motors (GM) of Mexico to use non-recyclable waste from the carmaker’s manufacturing plant in San Luis Potosí in its kilns. In exchange for the waste, Cemex will power GM’s thermoelectric generating plant. The step will allow both companies “to decrease consumption of non-renewable resources,” according to GM. It will also avoid the need to ship waste abroad.

Alternative opportunities

05 February 2014, Published under Cement News

Doubling of capacity at the Jebel Ali Sewage Treatment plant in Dubai, UAE, offers domestic cement producers the potential to use excess sludge from the process as an alternative fuel source. The move would not only allow the cement industry to scale down reliance on traditional fuels and,  therefore, reduce GHG emissions but also tackle the problem of how to safely dispose of sewage sludge in an eco-friendly manner. By Tariq Majid Khan Niazi, Jebel Ali Sewage Treatment plant, UAE. Je...

Reducing the carbon footprint

Alternative fuel characteristics

20 January 2014, Published under Cement News

Most microscopic analysis is based on classic studies carried out when single natural (traditional) fuels were the norm. How has the use of alternative fuels affected the microstructures observed? These observations start with a view on what differences new fuels can bring to the clinker. Figure 1: a belite cluster (150µm across) after the presence of coarse fly ash in the kiln feed Reducing conditions occur where there is an absence of oxygen such as at the bottom of an ocean o...
