Azerbaijan: Cement production drops by 30% in year to May

Cement production in Azerbaijan has fallen by 30.3 per cent for the five months to May 2016, Azer press reports. The national statistics committee put the decline in output down to lower public and private sector spending. Production of concrete fell by 60 per cent, to 177,000t. Azerbaijan produced 829,000t of cement in the first five months of the year. Clinker imports also fell by 55 per cent, to 140,500t, with prices remaining unchanged at US$46.60/t.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering the purchase of up to a 20 per cent stake in LafargeHolcim’s cement and clinker plant in Azerbaijan. If it decides to invest, EBRD will support LafargeHolcim in improving energy efficiency through the introduction of alternative fuels. Azerbaijan-based producer Norm Sement plans to start producing oil well cement from 2016 to reduce reliance on imports, Hasan Yalcinkaya, CEO of the company, said at a briefing yesterday. Akkord has announced the successful completion of Phase 2 of its Gazakh Cement plant with the participation of the International Bank of Azerbaijan. Last week, Gazakh Cement started clinker production of a new line which is expected to reach its full capacity of 2500tpd by October. Azerbaijan cement output increases 40% YoY

In the first five months of the year, Azerbaijan produced 1.1Mt of cement, a 40 per cent increase compared to the same period of 2013. The rise in domestic output has been attributed to the entry of new players in the local market and declining imports. Imports in the first five months of the year amounted to US$50m compared to US$61.5m, a drop of 19 per cent YoY. Going forward, the dependence of imports is expected to fall by 20 per cent in 2014-2015, according to industry sources.

NORM LLC may consider expanding its new 2Mta Qizildas Cement plant in Azerbaijan as early as next year, plant manager, Osman Nemli, has indicated.
