WCA calls for greater connectivity and communication

27 December 2023, Published under Cement News

The World Cement Association (WCA) has called for more research and development into low carbon cement production in emerging markets. Wei Rushan, president of the WCA, has highlighted an “evident disparity” in the allocation of funding for emerging technologies like carbon capture projects, “with a significant majority directed towards developed countries.”  “Technologies and solutions like alternative raw materials and fuels, upgrading processes and equipment to enhance energy efficienc...

Expanding the EU's carbon management accounting framework

13 October 2023, Published under Cement News

This week the CCS+ initiative released its EU guide to an integrated carbon accounting infrastructure for the industrial carbon management market. The market for carbon capture and storage (CCS), carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is developing and the accounting framework needs to be robust to ensure the best solutions will emerge from policies and investment. The CCS+ initiative claims that the deployment o...

Low Carbon Materials joins CCS+ initiative

30 August 2023, Published under Cement News

Low Carbon Materials (LCM) has joined the CCS+ initiative. LCM is a climate technology start-up specialising in low-carbon, next-generation construction material alternatives in the race to net zero. LCM’s flagship product, OSTO, is a carbon-negative aggregate for concrete, which significantly lowers the carbon footprint. The CCS+ initiative aims to scale cutting edge climate technologies by developing a robust accounting infrastructure that promotes environmental integrity. The CCS+ init...

Carbon mineralisation in the cement & concrete industry

23 May 2023, Published under Cement News

To mitigate CO 2 emissions from cement production, the cement and concrete industry can implement carbon capture and utilisation technologies such as mineral carbonation. While they present challenges, these technologies also offer the potential to deliver significant reductions in CO 2 emissions and improve the industry’s sustainability. By Maciej Zajac, Jan Skocek and Mohsen Ben Haha, Heidelberg Materials, Germany. Figure 1: cement and concrete value chain including the carbonatio...

CEMEX España enters CCU agreement with ETFuels

27 February 2023, Published under Cement News

CEMEX España has signed an agreement with the green fuel producer ETFuels to transform CO 2 from the CEMEX cement plant in Alicante , Spain, into green fuels. Under the agreement, ETFuels will combine up to 450,000tpa of captured CO 2 with green hydrogen to produce more sustainable fuels in the form of green methanol (e-methanol).  “Our goal of reaching zero net CO 2 emissions is achievable, and will be driven by collaboration and innovation,” said Fernando González-Olivieri, CEO, ...

CEMBUREAU calls for debate on CO2 utilisation

14 February 2023, Published under Cement News

CEMBUREAU, the European cement association, has reacted to the 2041 phase-out date for industrial CO 2 in the European Commission draft Delegated Act (ECDA) on renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs). “By proposing an arbitrary deadline on the use of industrial CO 2 , the European Commission severely restricts the deployment of carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) in the cement sector”, commented Koen Coppenholle, CEO of CEMBUREAU. “We regret that this phase-out date was establ...

Aker Carbon Capture enters Finnish market

31 January 2023, Published under Cement News

Aker Carbon Capture will deliver a pre-engineering study to the energy company St1 for the development of a carbon capture facility at Finnsementti ’s Lappeenranta cement plant. The captured CO 2 would be used for the first renewable synthetic methanol plant in Finland. Aker Carbon Capture’s Just Catch unit could capture around 40,000tpa of CO 2 , enabling the production of 25,000tpa of methanol. Aker Carbon Capture is currently delivering the world’s first carbon capture facility at ...

Rohrdorfer to be first German cement producer to have CO2 separation plant

07 March 2022, Published under Cement News

Germany's first CO 2  separation plant for cement production is currently being built on the premises of the cement works in Rohrdorf . Rohrdorfer, the operator of the cement plant, started the pilot project on its own initiative to explore the possibilities of separating CO 2 and thus climate-friendly cement production. The plant, which is being built in cooperation with the Andritz Group, is scheduled to go into operation by the end of June 2022.  The plant will capture 2tpd of CO ...
