New federal environmental regulations will cost the US cement industry billions in plant upgrades, which could lead to job outsourcing, higher prices and ultimately plant closures, according to one industry group. Siam City Cement Plc (SCCC), the country’s second largest cement maker, has embarked on a sustainable development mission which includes targets to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 12% and to derive 40% of its sales from green products. Lafarge has a carbon-permit surplus worth about of 29.4 million permits, the second largest excess in the European Union’s emissions trading system, environmental lobby, Sandbag said.
