Calgon Carbon (CCC) gets mercury removal contract

Calgon Carbon (CCC) announced a total of US$34m in new contracts this morning from one cement plant and three electric power companies to reduce their mercury emissions with the use of Calgon’s FLUEPAC activated carbon system.  The contract range from 1-5 years and can be extended beyond the initial terms. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has withdrawn its Title V operating permit renewal for the Lehigh Southwest Cement Company. The air district won’t submit a new permit to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency until stricter EPA rules governing mercury and other toxic emissions take effect in the spring. Continental Cement Co. is seeking a state permit to build additional waste storage at its Hannibal plant. Approval by the Department of Natural Resources could take two to three years. The cost of the improvements has not been released. Continental has burned hazardous waste at Hannibal since 1986. Orissa-based Shiva Cement aims to reduce carbon dioxide emission by 45 per cent through utilising direct crushing of slag. The company has installed a slag vertical roller mill (VRM) for separate grinding of slag.
