Pretoria Portland Cement, South Africa’s largest cement producer, reported an eight per cent rise in first-half profit (ending March 2012) and forecasts rises in regional demand. Net income rose to ZAR369m (US$45m) in the six months through March, from ZAR343m a year earlier. Pakistan cement exports earn US$339m in 9MFY2011-12

During 9MFY2011-12 (July-March), Pakistan cement exporters saw recovery in cement exports in terms of value. In Pakistani currency, the export also rose by 6.06%. In addition, the average cement price improved. Sephaku cement project on track, South Africa

Construction work at Sephaku Cement’s new Aganang plant near Lichtenburg is gathering pace, a company official has said. Engineering News (EN) reported Aganang project manager, Werner Kieweg, as saying that its Chinese contractor, Sinoma International Engineering, currently had about 238 Chinese employees on site and about 38 local workers. At the peak of construction – expected in January 2013 – some 500 local workers and 1000 Chinese employees are expected to be employed on the project....

The chief executive officer of South Africa’s Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC), Paul Stuiver, says he will stay on until the end of the to see the recruitment process for his successor through as his three year contract comes to an end. PPC is seeking a replacement for Mr Stuiver whose contract agreement ends in May. Competition Commission settles with Lafarge, South Africa

South Africa’s Competition Commission has reached a settlement with Lafarge for being part of cement cartel. Lafarge is to pay an administrative penalty of ZAR149m, or six per cent of its 2010 turnover in the South African Customs Union (South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Nambia). Strong gains in South African cement sales

Latest data by the South Africa Cement and Concrete Institute shows that domestic sales for the first two months of the year have registered a double-digit increase. For January and February 2012, cement sales reached 1.66Mt, a 13.7 per cent compared to the same period of 2011 (1.46Mt). Meanwhile, sales for February 2012 alone were 884,700t, representing a rise of 7.4 per cent compared to 823,934t in February 2011. Afrisam settles cement cartel complaint, South Africa

South African cement producer Afrisam has concluded a settlement agreement with the Competition Commission in which it admitted that it took part in a cement cartel and agreed to pay an administrative penalty of ZAR125m (US$16.7m). The penalty represents 3% of its previous year's cement turnover in the South African Customs Union region. South Africa: cement sales boom

In South Africa cement sales by volume soared by 22% YoY in January to 779,003t, data released by the Cement and Concrete Institute (CNCI) showed.  January’s data is merely the latest in a string of strong YoY increases. The increase in the past five months (September to January) was 10.5% YoY with the November 2011 volumes of 1,141,248t the highest monthly total since 2008.

South African cement sales increased by 22 per cent YoY in January 2012 to 779,003t compared to 638,749t in 2011, data released by the Cement and Concrete Institute (CNCI) showed.
