ICRA expects Indian demand growth to slow

Indian ratings agency ICRA is expecting cement demand growth in the country to taper to about seven per cent in the FY19-20, down from 13 per cent in the previous fiscal. Bhutan’s Dungsam Cement Corp Ltd (DCCL) has reported the narrowing of its losses to BTN30m (US$430,624) in 2018 from BTN720m in the previous year. The company has attributed the improved results to an uptick in cement production from 200,000t when its plant was commissioned in 2014 to 633,000t last year. Pakistan's cement industry has recorded a 5.5 per cent YoY fall in production during the 9MFY18-19 from 31.22Mt to 29.52Mt, reportedly due to a drop in local demand amongst other factors. Cimentos de Moçambique has shut down its 0.25Mta grinding plant in Matola, reportedly due to the fact that the company is operating significantly below capacity. "We closed the factory because there's no market. Vietnamese cement sales expected to rise 8% in Jan-Apr 2019

In the first four months of 2019, Vietnamese cement sales have been estimated to rise eight per cent YoY to 35.45Mt, according to the Vietnam Building Materials Association. This includes 21.65Mt sold domestically and a 23 per cent YoY rise in exports to 13.8Mt. Cement sales are expected to reach 9.18Mt in April, which is consistent with the previous year. Tajikistan has produced around 843,000t of cement in the first three months of 2019, an increase of nine per cent from 747,000t last year, according to Asia-Plus. Total Portland and blended cement deliveries in the USA and Puerto Rico fell by 5.3 per cent YoY to 7.78Mt in November 2018, according to data by the US Geological Survey (USGS). India's cement industry saw a 13.6 per cent YoY increase in volume to 275.7Mt in the first 10-months of FY18-19, driven largely by rural and affordable housing, according to a report by ICRA. Vietnamese cement sales are estimated to have reached 23.08Mt in the 1Q19, an increase of four per cent YoY, according to the latest data released by the Vietnam Building Materials Association. This includes 14.5Mt sold in the domestic market and 8.58Mt of exports. In March alone the country is expected to record a 3.5 per cent YoY increase in sales to 9.45Mt of cement.
