Vietnam to inspect price hike requests

The Government has instructed the ministries of Trade, Finance and Industry to jointly inspect the Vietnam Coal Corp. (Vinacoal), Vietnam Steel Corp. (VSC) and Vietnam Cement Corp. The price of cement in India increased by 9-9.5 per cent during Apr-Jan 2004-2005 compared to Apr-Jan 2003-3004 due to higher demand that was driven by infrastructure and housing boom, coupled with a higher capacity utilisation across most operators. Cement price in the country ruled at Rs160-170 up to May 2004 and after a fall during the monsoons, picked up to reach Rs140-170, depending on the region.  

Egyptian cement output

Egypt’s cement output fell to 1.849Mt in November 2004 from 2.352Mt in October 2004, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) said in a report.  Production of clinker inched up to 2.896Mt in November 2004 from 2.876Mt in the previous month.  Local cement sales decreased to 1.475Mt in November 2004 from 1.764Mt in October 2004, while cement exports dropped to 272,000t from 490,000t. 

DTI probing high cement prices

The Philippine Department of Trade and Industry has launched an investigation to determine whether the continuous increase in the prices of cement is justified. Philippine cement prices continue to rise, hitting as high as P170 per bag in the tiny province of Siquijor. UAE steel and cement prices are stable, and off their recent highs, reported Gulf News. Cement is presently Dhs257 per tonne, down 15 per cent on four months ago. Steel is 10 per cent cheaper than four months ago at Dhs1700 per tonne. But these are still the highest price levels in the GCC. 

Titan America plans cement terminal expansion

Titan America LLC will spend US$15m adding to its cement terminal at the Port of Tampa, the company announced Friday. A cement carrier operated by Norway’s Kristian Gerhard Jebsen that was detained in the US for security failings on the first day the new law came into effect has been held again.
